The Etsy title formula that gets your listing found

Your first 40 characters decide whether Etsy shows your listing at all. Here's the title structure that ranks, with before-and-after examples.

Your Etsy title is doing two jobs at once, and they pull in opposite directions. It has to contain the phrases buyers search for, and it has to read like something a human wrote. Sellers who optimise for only one of those lose either the traffic or the sale.

The first 40 characters carry the weight

Etsy leans hardest on the front of your title, and that is also the portion a buyer actually sees in search results and browser tabs. Whatever you put in the first few words is, for most practical purposes, what your listing is about.

This is why starting with your shop name is so costly. Willow & Clay Studio — spends your most valuable space on a phrase nobody is searching for yet.

The formula

Main keyword + style or material + who it’s for or the occasion

That order is deliberate. The main keyword goes first because it carries the most weight. Style and material narrow it to the right buyer. Occasion and recipient catch the enormous volume of Etsy searches that are really gift searches.

Before and after

Before: Willow & Clay — Handmade Mug, Perfect Gift!

Shop name first, a vague product word, an exclamation mark doing no work at all. Nothing here matches a real search.

After: Ceramic Coffee Mug, Speckled Stoneware, Handmade Housewarming Gift

The product is named in the first three words, the material tells the right buyer they have found their aesthetic, and the occasion catches gift shoppers. It still reads like a sentence.

Where sellers go wrong

  • Keyword stuffing. Mug Mugs Coffee Mug Tea Mug Cup Cups reads as spam to buyers and does not help you the way it might have years ago.
  • Repeating the same word. Saying mug four times does not rank you four times higher. Spend that space on a different phrase.
  • Words nobody searches. “Perfect”, “unique”, “beautiful”, “stunning”. Every seller thinks their work is these things, and no buyer types them.
  • Leading with the occasion. Christmas Gift Ceramic Mug buries what the product actually is, and stops making sense in January.

Make the title and tags agree

Titles and tags are not separate systems. A phrase that appears in both is a stronger signal than one that appears in either alone. If speckled stoneware is in your title, it should be one of your thirteen tags too.

That does not mean copying your title into the tag boxes. It means picking your three or four strongest phrases, putting them in the title, and letting the remaining tags cover the angles the title has no room for.

Read it out loud

This is the fastest quality check there is. If you cannot say your title to another person without feeling silly, a buyer will not enjoy reading it either — and the click matters as much as the ranking. A listing that ranks well and reads badly just gets scrolled past.

Fix five, then wait

Do not rewrite your whole shop this afternoon. Pick the five listings with the most views and the fewest sales, rewrite their titles using the formula, and leave them for thirty days. Then check Shop Manager → Stats → Search terms to see which new phrases started bringing people in.
