13 Etsy tags that actually rank

Most sellers waste their tags on single words nobody searches. How to use all thirteen on long-tail phrases real buyers type.

Etsy gives every listing thirteen tags. Most sellers fill in five or six single words and move on — which quietly throws away more than half the search traffic that listing could have earned. Tags are free, and every one you leave empty is a search you have chosen not to compete in.

Use all thirteen, every time

Etsy matches what a buyer types against your tags, title, and attributes. A tag you didn’t write is a phrase you can’t rank for. There is no penalty for using all thirteen and no bonus for restraint, so the only question is whether each one is pulling its weight.

Single words are a fight you will lose

Tag a listing mug and you are competing with hundreds of thousands of others, most of them from shops with years of sales history behind them. Etsy has no reason to show yours.

Tag it speckled ceramic mug and the pool shrinks dramatically — and the person typing that phrase already knows what they want. Fewer people search it, but far more of them buy. That trade is almost always worth making.

Think in phrases, not keywords

Each tag holds up to 20 characters, and Etsy treats the whole tag as a phrase. That means gift for coffee lover is one tag, not four. Use the space. A two- or three-word phrase is nearly always stronger than a single word.

Cover the different ways people search

Two buyers wanting the same mug will search completely differently. Spread your thirteen tags across the angles rather than repeating one idea:

  • What it is — ceramic coffee mug, handmade pottery mug
  • Material and style — speckled stoneware, matte glaze mug
  • Who it’s for — gift for coffee lover, gift for her
  • Occasion — housewarming gift, christmas gift
  • The look — minimalist kitchen, rustic home decor

Occasion and recipient tags matter more than most sellers realise. A huge share of Etsy searches are people shopping for someone else, and they search by relationship and event long before they search by material.

Four ways sellers waste tags

  1. Your shop name. Nobody is searching it yet. When they are, they’ll find you anyway.
  2. Deliberate misspellings. Etsy corrects typos for buyers. You are not catching extra traffic, you are burning a tag.
  3. Plurals of a phrase you already used. Etsy already treats singular and plural as related. ceramic mug and ceramic mugs is one tag spent twice.
  4. Single words that duplicate a phrase. If you have speckled ceramic mug, a separate mug tag adds nothing.

A worked example

For one handmade speckled ceramic mug, thirteen tags that each earn their place:

  • ceramic coffee mug · speckled stoneware · handmade pottery
  • gift for coffee lover · housewarming gift · gift for her
  • minimalist kitchen · rustic home decor · matte glaze mug
  • wheel thrown mug · pottery gift · cozy coffee cup · artisan ceramics

Notice there isn’t a single bare word in the list, and no two tags are competing for the same search.

Then measure, and change one thing

Open Shop Manager → Stats → Search terms. Etsy will show you the phrases that actually brought people to your listings. Some will surprise you — buyers describe things in ways makers never would.

Pick your five worst-performing listings, rewrite their tags using the phrases Etsy is already showing you, and leave them alone for thirty days. Changing everything at once tells you nothing about what worked.
